Why Google Pagerank is Still Important
by Frank Jovine on 07/26/2010 in Google, SEO
It really makes me wonder why many people devalue Pagerank. Is it because they’re finding it hard to get a worthy Pagerank? I am not sure what the real reason is, but Pagerank is still important.
Pagerank is important when it comes to SEO. When the main page of your website gets a boost in Pagerank, all your sub pages linking off of it get a boost in Pagerank. I’m really confused as to why people feel the need to write off PR.
Benefits of Pagerank
- Most advertisers look at two score cards when deciding to advertise on a website. They look at the websites Alexa rank and Google PR. The better your scores, the more likely you will have advertisers paying you for ad placement on your website. I’ve seen links go for $1,000/mo. for a single link. Obviously the site had a PR (7) and it was a very popular TLD (Top Level Domain).
- The more backlinks you have, the more likely a visitor will click on your link from sites that are linking into you. This will improve referral traffic to your website.
- It is believed that sites with higher PR pages get indexed more often.
Note: While a link from a high PR web site will help out your PR some, it won’t help nearly as much than if this link was on a closely related web site. Also, High Page Rank doesn’t mean high search ranking.
Need a boost in PR?
You can use a simple operator in Google’s search box to find blogs that are closely related to your targeted keywords.
Operator: site:.com inurl:blog “comment” -”you must be logged in” -”posting closed” -”comment closed’ “tech”
In this case, you are trying to retrieve all blog sites that have the extension .com where you can author comments on and remove those blog sites that require you to be logged in before making comments, postings are close and comments are closed. The last string is your targeted keywords.
To find out if a blog is do-follow, download the Firefox add-on NoDoFollow. Links highlighted in blue are dofollow and those in pink are nofollow.

Your point on advertisers view is really appreciative but I am confused at the bottom line! Can you explain this again: ‘it won’t help nearly as much than if this link was on a closely related web site’ ?

The part about PR being important for advertiser is a very good point. There are only few metrics that advertisers are looking for when choosing advertising venues, and PR is certainly one of the big ones.
