Twitter Users Change Your Password Now!

by Frank Jovine on 02/03/2010 in Security, Security Info

Twitter once again has made news, but not good news. The microblogging site has asked a large number of users to reset their passwords due to unusual activity relating to a large increase in followers on certain accounts.

This is becoming far too common for Twitter and users are ready to walk very soon, unless Twitter can add stronger security measures to defend against such attacks.

Twitter believes this issue is a result of misuse of Twitter accounts. Unknown persons are suspected of gaining access to accounts using information culled from various torrent sites and associated forums. Users are assumed to have used user names and passwords for these sites which are the same as they use for Twitter. Twitter does not reveal how many accounts may be affected.

According to Twitter’s status blog, initial analysis suggests that someone has, over a protracted period of time, been setting up torrent sites and selling them on to other operators – but these sites include back doors allowing the original site author to read confidential data, including access credentials, at a later date.

Twitter what’s next?

This is really bothering, even if we change password, this can certainly happen again if Twitter cannot think of stronger security measures asap.

Well, even if that is not smart, a lot of people use same ID and passwords for different websites.

      Arafat,

So this is why I got that message from Twitter. Actually, other social networks like Facebook are attacked too. Couple of my friends just deleted their accounts because they are hacked. They change passwords but nothing changed.
