Looking to get the home organized? Even though most people frown at the thought of doing housework, many of us don’t feel in control until we know everything is in its place. If you’re looking to get your home organized but aren’t sure how, we have the perfect geek tips that will make the process easier. That’s right – even geeks can keep a clean, organized house and if anything, the process is even simpler!

1. Make a Spreadsheet – You’re no stranger to spreadsheets, and these handy charts are perfect for keeping organized and allow you to see what types of chores need to be done and when. For starters, list all of your household chores on the far left column, such as dusting and vacuuming. Then list the areas of the home that these chores need to be done, as well as how often. Check them off as you go and in no time, your spreadsheet will be your go-to source for keeping organized.

2. Create a Shared Calendar – You’re a geek at heart, which means you’re programmed to work the internet to your advantage. Why not use it to your advantage when keeping organized? Make a shared calendar that allows you to be interactive and share your plans with others. Shared calendars are especially great if you’re splitting household tasks with roommates.

3. Use Desktop Widgets – You were born with the word widget in your vocabulary, and let’s face it, you use them for everything else, right? From keeping updated on emails to checking the weather, desktop widgets are convenient and fun. Why not add a widget that will help you stay on top of your housework as well? You can either design your own widget or use one that already exists. Maybe it’s a countdown to your next big cleaning day, or perhaps it’s a to-do list of your daily chores. Whatever the reason, a desktop widget can help you remember.

4. Virtual Cleaning – Even though you may be wired to think like a geek, it doesn’t mean you all think alike! While some geeks enjoy spreadsheets, others need visualizations. But instead of having to shamefully draw a picture of your home, make a virtual one on your computer. You can either use a high-tech program to make 3D images of your homes interior, or simply make a blueprint. Then, color code which areas need to be cleaned on which days using a color graph.

5. Establish a Game Plan – It’s not just the way you plan to keep organized that’s important. Implementing these strategies is the most difficult part, which is why you need a game plan in place. Determine how you’ll accomplish your tasks, such as by cleaning room by room or cleaning with certain supplies first.

6. Keep Track of Inventory – That’s right, you can’t get your cleaning done if you don’t have the right supplies on hand. In order to maximize time and reduce frustration, be sure to keep inventory of your cleaning supplies. Either add them to your spreadsheet or start a new spreadsheet. List all the supplies you need, including soap, dusting cloths, and glass cleaner. Do a check every few weeks so you know which cleaners you’ll need to pick up at the store.

7. Pop-Up Reminders – People often think that geeks aren’t forgetful, but really, it’s quite the opposite. Fortunately, geeks know how to keep organized a little better than everyone else. Those convenient little pop-up reminders on your computer are perfect for staying on track. Set up reminders for what rooms in the home need to be cleaned each day. These reminders are also great for little things, such as picking up detergent after work.

8. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Geeks are creative by nature, which means you can reduce clutter and find new uses for some of your regular trash. For example, try reusing plastic yogurt containers for kids’ stacking toys, to store small beads or trinkets, or to start an herb garden. Check out the lids of yogurt containers, the wrappers of juice boxes, and aluminum cans. Many products can be worth money when recycled properly.

9. Time Management – Geeks are resourceful when it comes to time, which is why you’ll want to get the most done in the shortest amount of time. Designate how much time you want to spend on each task. You can use desktop widgets to help you stay on track, such as digital timers or hourglasses. Another helpful tip is spray cleaners, let them sit, and work on something else in the meantime.

10. Preparation – All this planning sounds great, but it won’t work if you’re not prepared. Have a cleaning belt, caddy, or bucket that you can transport with you, as well as a copy of your spreadsheet. Also keep certain supplies, such as toilet bowl cleaner, in the bathroom for easy reach.

Microsoft should have used a calculator to factor the correct severance pay outs, but instead they used an abacus which they didn’t know how to operate apparently.

As the company was handing out pink slips to some 1,400 employees last month, the accounting department miscalculated severance packages. It turns out that the company overpaid these former workers and, now that the error has been discovered, Microsoft wants its money back.

The copy of the letter floating around the Internet has the names and dollar amounts blacked out so it’s hard to say if the payback amount is $10, $100, $1,000 or more. And we also don’t know if all 1,400 laid-off workers were affected.

Copy of the letter at TechCrunch here.

Why would anyone who just got the boot give back money to Microsoft? You can bet I wouldn’t!

In a recent poll, 72% said they would not give the money back, 20% would, and I like to know who that 20% are. The remaining 7% couldn’t decide.

Talk about adding insult to injury. I think Microsoft should just write it off, Uncle Sam will not mind that at all.

It looks like talks are back on with Yahoo on a potential deal for Microsoft to buyout the struggling search company. It has not been a week since Yahoo found their new CEO Carol Bartz. Microsoft’s chief executive, Steve Ballmer, met with Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock in New York this week, according to a report in The New York Times.

The newspaper cited an unnamed source who had been briefed on the meeting, but no details of the conversation have been released.

Yahoo’s appointment of Carol Bartz as chief executive has heightened speculation that the companies may be able to agree on a takeover, with Microsoft possibly acquiring Yahoo’s search engine business.

The news follows reports of an informal conversation between Bartz and Ballmer after she was selected by Yahoo’s board.

Jerry Yang, who has stepped down as the head of Yahoo, let a deal with Microsoft fall through last year, angering many of the company’s investors.

Yahoo didn’t immediately return a call for comment, and Microsoft declined to comment.

Will Microsoft finally get what they wanted for more than a year? I believe there’s a better chance now that Jerry Yang is no longer making the calls for Yahoo.

The last 24 hours have been the most frustrating for me with TechJaws.com going off the air. The reason for the outage is both good and bad.

The Good:

We received more than 10,000 unique visitors between 2:00pm and 4:00pm CDT on October 31st.

The Bad:

According to our current host company, TechJaws exceed the CPU utilization during that time period. This caused all the virtual accounts on that server to respond slow or not respond at all.

I am in the process of trying to get my upload files, image folder, and get the other two domains back online as they’re paid for until 8/2009. This process of getting my account un-suspended has been painful to say the least. It would have been a great close for the month of October with that traffic I missed out on. It also would have been a great start for the month of November.

I would like to thank all of you who were concerned and sent emails. I received more than 100 emails in the last 24 hours.

Thank you all, you’re the best!

Sunnyvale-based AMD said it will make a “significant corporate announcement” and hold a conference call with industry analyst Tuesday hosted by Chief Executive Dirk Meyer. It did not give details on the announcement.

The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, said the chip maker will say it is spinning off its manufacturing operations into a new joint venture that will make chips for AMD, as well as other companies.

With funding from investment groups associated with the government of Abu Dhabi, the new venture will take over AMD manufacturing facilities, including large plants in Germany, the Journal reported.

Last year, the Abu Dhabi government’s investment arm, the Mubadala Development Co., took an 8.1 percent stake in AMD.

The sounds that are generated from his collection of Ibanez guitars are far beyond our galaxy and imagination.

I was introduced to Joe’s music back in 1992. I was in J&R Music World in New York City and I ask the man behind the counter – who is that playing? – Joe Satriani he replied. I asked what song and CD is it from? And he said – his latest called “Extremist”. Of course I purchased a copy and out the door I went. I played that CD everyday until I my ears bleed.

I truly love instrumentals and for good reason. I can have my own interpretation of the song that puts me at a time and place in my life. With lyrics you kind of lose that as it’s the artist providing you their feeling and story behind the song.

One of my favorite licks is Cool #9, because it has a blues sound that just takes it to the next level. There are many other songs I like such as Flying in a Blue Dream, Rubina, Love Thing, and many of what G3 produced.

I am very excited that Joe is coming to Chicago in October 8th and playing at the Chicago Theater. I have been privileged to see Joe 6 times in 3 different cities, New York, Las Vegas and now Chicago.

Thank you Joe for sharing!

Special thanks goes to my friend Susie from Soul-to-Soul for sketching an awesome drawing of Joe. You can see the drawing here.

I also want to thank Buck (Susie’s Husband) for being so cool and for the Cactus Live CD. I am going to play that all weekend! Check out Buck’s new blog site, though we had to twist his arm, he finally caved.
