Scott,

I believe nothing will happen as far as punishment goes. Just recently a major hacker walked from his crime, so what makes this more severe?

On the news this evening they discussed possible criminal penalties involved with something like this. Has anyone been convicted of hacking into someone else's personal email account before? Did they catch whomever did this to Paris Hilton?

There was another prominent figure that had the same thing happen, but under more dubious circumstances. Karl Rove was the "victim" and the publicity actually helped him a great deal. If it's not out there already, the conspiracy theorists will have a hay-day with this one!

I think it's important to remember that (regardless of your political leanings) Sarah Palin is the victim of a criminal act, and these hackers should not be applauded for breaking into someone else's email account.

Interestingly, Sarah Palin isn't the first public figure to have had her email hacked. Paris Hilton suffered a similar fate back in 2005.

Her mistake was making the name of her pet chihuahua the secret question/answer to reset her Sidekick's password. Ooops!

I've made a video comparing Sarah Palin's plight with Paris Hilton's experiences. You can view it at http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2008/09/18/paris-hilton-sarah-palin-video/ or embed it on your own site if you like.
