New Spam Hits WordPress Comments

Have you noticed that you are getting a lot more spam from two services called Comment Poster and Social Bookmarks Submitter? Both of these services are spamming many blogs in an attempt to gain traffic and revenue.
Comment Poster is a service where you can automate comment posting on blogs to gain backlinks and traffic. It’s like set it and forget it, but it’s a spam program.
The IP associated with this spam is 74.86.148.194. I have rated these sites as poor and have marked both sites as spam using mywot.com.
The comments for both these services are as follows:
Comment Poster – Post comments on websites automatically using automated comments posting software. Get thousands of backlinks per day, increase your sales and earnings. Automated comments poster is the best way to build backlinks and promote websites automatically!
Social Bookmarks Submitter – Submit Links to Social Bookmarking Websites Automatically! Get Thousands of Visitors! Increase Website Traffic and Income with Automatic Social Bookmarks Submitter. Prepare to upgrade your servers today – you will have thousands of real and highly targeted visitors who will make you the money like crazy!
The sites are similar with the exception of a simple title change.
If this service is spamming your blog, you can download the WOT (Web of Trust) add-on for Firefox or IE by visiting www.mywot.com.
These services need to be reported and removed from the internet.

Frank excellent post, I recently had a few of these come through. It amazes me how the same effort could be put into developing something that offers quality as opposed to spam like this.

It’s amazing how much ingenuity is wasted by trying to shortcut the system and get something for nothing. We are talking about people who could use their talents on productive pursuits but choose to annoy everyone instead. What a waste.

I’ve been having a lot more trackback spam in general recently. It seemed to have disappeared for awhile, but now is picking up steam again.

@Frank
I have likewise been receiving this spam from both sites that you have listed above on both of my blogs (wordpress free hosted and wordpress self-hosted). As I moderate all comments I’ve been marking it as spam and feeding it into Defensio and Akismet. Thanks for validating my feelings and actions in your post, and for supplying more information on Comment Poster, Social Bookmarks Submitter and WOT (Web of Trust. I appreciate it.

Excellent article. My blog was spammed recently. I was such a newbee that I didn’t even know blogs were spammed. I’m glad to see people are getting the word out about the threats that are out there.

Betty,
This spam is just a service trying to gain revenue, but now that the word is out, we hope that others will report these sites.
Thank you for the comment!

Thanks Frank, for locating the spamming service. I run a handful of blogs and I absolutely hate the comment spam. One of my blogs ran up to 5k+ spam comments
I do agree with Jonathan as well…what a waste.

Hey Frank,
You’re spot-on correct – we’ve been tracking a lot of new crap from these guys as well, and I’m definitely as frustrated as you are when I see this kind of new spam rampage. Fortunately, we’ve updated WP-SpamFree and the latest version effectively handles anything from these guys. We’ll keep an eye on them too. Thought you’d like to know.
Take care!

Scott,
I have upgraded the WP-SpamFree as well and so far I haven’t seen any new posts. I also have reported them to a number of spam governance sites as well.
Thanks for the comment!
