New Porn Domain XXX Gets Approval?

by on 06/25/2010 in Internet

XXX Domain ExtensionTen years later when it was first proposed the .xxx could get conditional approval by ICANN today. The .xxx domain extension will obviously be used for porn related sites only.

The conditions, whatever they are could pose a problem with censorship in the porn industry. Porn trade group the Free Speech Coalition and notable industry figures such as Larry Flynt have vocally objected to the domain, saying it invites censorship.

ICM Registry, the company behind .xxx, is confident that the board will approve the new domain extension. ICM chairman Stuart Lawley said he was cautiously optimistic about tomorrow’s board vote.

I am not sure how ICANN will force established porn sites to move over to the .xxx extension. Many of the most popular porn sites have been around since the early to mid 90’s. There was no information on what porn sites would need to apply. I would think that existing porn sites would have both the .xxx and their dot com variety.

ICANN will need to establish ground rules on what is deemed as a porn site and who needs to apply for the new .xxx extension. You may think porn is frontal nudity or even the act of sex, but it could be art. The form in which porn is seen today is explicit acts of sex definably played out in detail.

As of this writing, there still has been no update on whether or not the board approved.xxx.
