Never Lose Your Pet With Microchip Technology

by on 06/16/2009 in Tech

miniature-schnauzerTechnology has come along way and not only for humans, but for our little friends.

Is Fido your best friend? What would happen if Fido disappeared? It’s very devastating to a family when a pet is missing. But with advanced technology, you can have peace of mind knowing your pet can be tracked like Lo-Jack.

The chip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted between the shoulders of the animal. There’s very little discomfort to the animal.

Little Johnny may not have to put up as many posters for his missing dog if he gets it implanted with a microchip.

Each chip has a number linked to the owner’s information. If a lost pet is picked up by an animal shelter or police department and scanned, the pet can easily be returned to its owner through this identification system.

The microchips are transferable from owner to owner, if you were giving up your pet for any reason.

The cost of these chips vary, but are cheap.

Even if you walk your dog or keep them gated, it’s important to take precautions just in case someone leaves the gate open or the dog gets free on the leash.

Our dog Bella has a Microchip and it makes us feel much more at ease knowing that if she gets out, we have a way to find her.

  1. These chips are a good idea. I have two flamepoint Siamese cats that mean a lot to our family. Both have an implanted microchip. It doesn’t guarantee that you will get them back if they are lost, but it sure does improve the odds.

      Jonathan,

There are like family members and sometimes more. :)

Aww, that mini-schnauzer picture is so cute!

It’s a good idea though… you never know when something will happen that will allow your pets to break free of their home or leashes. I had a cat that broke free of her harness once. I caught her in the end, but cats especially can move like lightning when they are afraid.

      Kristi,

I know we have the same breed and I would be devastated if she ever was missing.

Thanks for the shout out to PetLvr Frank!

I would like to add a thought about microchips .. that is if your pet dog or cat runs loose and a neighbor finds and takes him/her into their house .. or if you lost a pet and it is quite healthy, friendly, and taken aback by the people who find the pet … your pet may never be taken to the Veterinary office where the Vet will scan the microchip to connect the pet back to the original owner. In fact, it is possible some may avoid that for that specific reason.

It’s always good to double up and keep a collar with current tags on your pet if there is chance your pet will be outside and/or off-leash.

Our dogs all have microchips though .. same with out cat!
