How to Recover Your XP Password

by on 12/22/2008 in Computers, Tech

In a previous post called “How to Crack Windows XP and Vista Login Passwords” we talked about a product called Ophcrack that can recover XP and Vista login passwords, but here’s another way which may be easier and faster.

Creating a Windows XP password reset disk can one day save you from losing access to your PC. While there are ways to recover lost passwords without a password reset disk, they are often complicated and could be time consuming.

Create a password reset disk today and never worry about forgetting your password again.

How do I create a password reset disk? Follow the easy steps below to create a password reset disk for Windows XP.

  1. Click on Start, than click on Control Panel.
  2. Click on User Accounts link.
  3. Note: If you’re viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, double-click on the User Accounts icon.

  4. In the pick an account to change area of the User Accounts window, click on your Windows XP user name.
  5. In the Related Tasks area to the left, click Prevent a forgotten password link.
  6. When the Forgotten Password Wizard window appears, click Next
  7. Note: You will need a floppy disk drive and a blank floppy disk.

  8. On the next screen, make sure a blank floppy disk is inserted in your floppy disk drive.
  9. Click Next to continue.

  10. With the disk still in the drive, enter your current account password in the text box and click Next.
  11. Windows XP will now create the password reset disk.
  12. When the progress indicator shows 100% complete, click Next and then click Finish in the next window.

  13. You can now remove the floppy disk from your computer.

Remember to store your password reset disk in a safe place.

Note: If you ever change your login password for XP, you will not need to create another password reset disk.
