Google PageRank Update Underway!

by on 10/30/2009 in Google

The Google toolbar update is underway! The update started early this morning here in the USA and it should continue for the next 24 to 48 hours. There are many bloggers that keep a close watch on their Google PageRank and only wish for one thing, and that is an increase on their homepage and post pages.

It’s important to remember that the toolbar is “not an accurate indicator of how Google ranks or values a site,” as Loren Baker notes at Search Engine Journal. It is still a major factor.

About Google PageRank?

Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks at more than just the volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.

Free Backlink Tools and more

There are many free tools that will provide information on how well your website or blog is performing when it comes to backlinks. Here are a few free tools that provide additional information about your website or blog in addition to backlinks;

http://websitegrader.com/ (Website Grader not only gives you information on backlinks, but a lot more pertinent information about your blog and website).

http://www.seomoz.org/toolbox/backlinks (seomoz.org provides a nice inventory of tools to measure your blog and website. You must have an account, which is free).

http://www.dnscoop.com/ (Another site value tool that gives you more than just information on backlinks).

I’m so grateful for the info you share Frank. I just set up Sweetbusinesses.com and I wanted to make sure that I am on the right track. Using seorush, I discovered that I am, however I wouldn’t have found this out without your info. Thank you again.

My blog being a hobby, I use all my time creating content, moderating the Forum and managing the site. Not to mention promotion which is a huge time killer. If I only could download one which would you recommend? seorush?

    Thanks

Content is king! No matter what tactics you use for traffic, if you have good content, you will do well. But if you’re only commenting to just acquire backlinks, and your site has little authority, than your site will suffer. :)

Thanks for the info! I just checked my toolbar and it looks like my blog got updated to page rank of 3 today from the previous 0.

My blog is a little less than 3 months old right now.

Hmm this might be a bit off topic, but how do you suggest I lower my bounce rate because its really high. Maybe because I have a lot of external links.

    Thanks.

I don’t pay attention to the value indicator, it’s useless.

Frank, I do believe in Loren Baker’s note that you mentioned. Anwyay SEOmoz is great and as for me, I am stable at “4” currently!

I’m not sure what’s going on with my sites .. if any moved at all, I’m guessing they went south. :(

My sites both remained at PR4. One wonders what actual value PageRank may have given the fact it has been removed from Google WebMasters accounts but still remains on the toolbar. I likewise wonder why those who do have paid links on their sites are so hyped about PageRank. Google hates paid links and favors natural linking patterns so choosing to have them means a sacrifice in page rank.

      timethief,

Google Webmaster Tools removed the PR and has no affect on other sites. Way to keep the PR 4 going!

I m happy that Google once again pushed me one step further and increased my PR, but the quality of work i have done for the past three months i was expecting a little more from it but you have heard the proverb anyway that is “Something is better than nothing”. So Thanks to God. My website age is 6 months only and now i have PR2 and i need to share a strange thing here that my main page got PR2 and an inner page got PR3, isn’t a little wonder.

Thanks for the info. I checked all my sites and a couple of them had an updated page rank. I was excited. then I remembered that some people say that page rank is meaningless…so I felt bad again. Then I had some cake. mmm, cake—my life’s panacea.
