Google Pagerank Update More Frequent

by Frank Jovine on 07/21/2009 in Google

If you haven’t noticed, the Google Pagerank update is becoming more frequent as of late. In the past 2 years, the average between updates was approximately 3 months, but the last 4 updates have come much sooner.

Last 6 updates

January 1, 2009
April 1, 2009 – 3 months
May 8, 2009 – 23 days
May 19, 2009 – 11 days
May 27, 2009 – 8 days
June 23, 2009 – 26 days

As you can see the updates are more frequent prior to April 1st update. It looks like Google is making changes to not only the frequency of their updates, but also how it handles SERP (Search Engine Result Pages).

Pagerank Facts

What is Page Rank (PR)? According to Google: Pagerank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.

What advantage is there for having a high Pagerank? Many advertisers use the Google Pagerank as a scorecard on whether or not to advertise on a given site. The higher the PR the more likely a site will make money by selling links on their high PR pages. It’s important that you don’t sell too many links as it may look like a link farm which in Google’s eyes is a no-no and your site could be penalized. Selling a dozen ad spaces will not put you in the penalty box.

How do I improve the Pagerank of my site? First off, It’s pages that have PR and not sites. That’s why it’s possible for an internal page to have a higher PR than the home page. The way a page gets PR is from links to it and that’s the only way of improving PR. IBLs (incoming backlinks) from high PR pages can give you more PR than links from low PR pages.
There are many tactics to improve incoming links to your blog or website. These tactics are being used everyday. They’re as follow;

  • Commenting on dofollow blogs – see the links below
  • Submitting your site to web directories
  • Guest posting on other blogs with links back to your blog or website
  • Social media

The reason for that 8day REDO .. was that google incorrectly gave me a PR=4 .. they must have stumbled on it 8 days later and did a Do-OVER and put me back to PR=2, as before.

Great list Frank. I am kinda new to the whole tec and seo world so I need all the help I can get. Because of the economy, we are doing a lot of stuff that we might normally hire out to do. I have gone back and read other posts and learned a lot from your blog. Thanks!

It just seeems that google just can’t make up its mind these days. I mean why not update page rank continuously for crying out loud if you are going to be so willy nilly about when these updates are occuring.

I can’t wait to read your article on SERPS.

Rightly noticed. Infact for the update of June recently even I was not expecting it and as such didnt bother to improve my backlinks. Well on the other hand its better to see shorter update period.. It for sure motivates new bloggers specially to work on their serp and backlinks.

Seeing results quicker boost the moral of new bloggers.

Thanks Frank, You have quite beautifully defined the facts and importance of the PageRank.

Thats quite true, there have been frequent updates in the PR in recent months.

One more change I’ve been noticing since past around a year. Now Google keeps updating the Back-links (the publically shown ones) very frequently, just like Yahoo!

My crystal ball says last week! That’s when the last update occurred according to many of our pages that now have a pagerank.
