On Thursday, Facebook experienced an outage for 2 ½ hours due to a glitch in the social media network’s database software. There were messages flying around the social network that the site was compromised by a group of hackers. The site was not hacked in anyway shape or form.
Facebook users were outraged yesterday because of how long the site was down before it was accessible again. The issue I have is why anyone would be so angry and upset just because you were unable to post messages or share a photos? The only people that should be upset are advertisers who count on FB to generate traffic to their respected businesses.
The outage could be looked at as a good thing, because it gives people a break from the digital space and maybe during that time you did something more productive, maybe.
The addiction is incredible and I am sure that Facebook loves this and why not. They are becoming the mainstay and they’re beginning to rival Google and Microsoft in some areas.
Facebook is great, but it will not solve World hunger. To me, it’s another fad that has gone from a dorm room to a college campus and now global. It’s a phenomenon on how fast this social giant has grown, but all good things never last forever.
The biggest concern users should have with Facebook, is not how long an outage occurred, but the ongoing phishing scams that pop up on Facebook almost every week. Cyber criminals love FB, because of its rich user base (500 million) and they know a good percentage of its members will fall for scams.
Be careful and stop sweating the small stuff.
Man ain’t it the truth! If you can’t get into Facebook, then those silly pictures you were going to post will just have to wait! Now on the other hand, when Gmail is down, I consider that a crisis. ;)
Christie,
You always say it the best, I love it!
That I didn’t know until you post this. Thanks a lot for sharing. Cyber criminals not only visit FB but other social media, too!
Absolutely true. Facebook today was so fab. All people from all walks of life are totally hooked on it. Proper discipline to use digital at the right way is a must to make ourselves balance from the technology and reality. Since I’m not into Facebook this past few days, ( I really help myself not to get into). I just heard from a news that Facebook suffers from this. question arose from my mind. Is Facebook having been this great that in a couple of minutes of non existence becomes an issue like this?
Actually, this is not really a privacy issue, since it applies equally well to any “click-wrap” agreement, be it for an on-line web site, a purchased software program, or whatever.
Apparently you did not read the article and this is probably an auto commenter.
Hey Frank,
This is not auto generator, actually i just overlooked it and write a comment because i thought it was about click wrap agreement. But now i have read your article and the things you mentioned here are absolutely right that cyber criminals love facebook.
LOL – this is sooo Frank. :-) Was about to make a comment but this reply of yours did not escape my attention…
Ahh, Facebook, social media – people are really into it (those 500 Million less probably 40% who are second/3rd accounts and spams). In my country, it’s becoming a ‘bad’ habit, a replacement of what used to be more productive time for work, for exercise, watching a tv show or a movie.
People are on Facebook instead of working on a job or school assignment.
Can you imagine what’s the future be like?
Hey old friend!
People need to look outside for sure and you are probably balls on saying that some of the 500 million are second accounts and spam accounts.
Hope all is well!
I agree that those who have the most right to be annoyed are those who have paid for advertising.
For everyone else it serves as a reminder not to rely on any one system, electronic or otherwise, as things will and do go wrong. People have complained they weren’t able to contact friends to arrange meeting up etc, but if they were real friends you would have other ways of contacting them (anyone remember the days when we used to phone people to make plans?).
Of course just like the previous social networking site friendster, we can also count the days until facebook fades out. It has along with it the disadvantages such as the cyber criminals but i also know of a case that helped. The police can already monitor criminals using their facebook accounts. Not so long ago, I have heard that the police had caught a group of criminals by doing so. Well I think there will always be two sides in a coin and since its a craze these days, let’s just hope that people are still conscious in using it. I mean, they still know that facebook is for their free time, not during work hours and especially not inside classrooms.
I think the fade will be a slow one being that they have so many users. The biggest problem like you pointed out is the cyber criminals that lurk.
Hey Frank,
I enjoy Facebook, I even have a farm (I know my son already tells me it’s lame and the crops wont really die lol)
I didn’t know it was down, but I am not on it like some people are.
Cyber criminals are a problem I’m sure, I think that cyber bullying is a much bigger problem for most of the population on FB.
It’s an unhealthy habit, letting a social networking site become the mainstay of your social diet. Parents need to show their kids a better way to be social, problem is that so many parents are also using FB to socialize these days too.
While I don’t want to see FB go away, I think it would help the countless people who are living and some dying on FB.
That’s just my opinion, but I’m sure you agree Frank ;o)
Shirl,
As long as you don’t live FB you are fine and just a casual user. The big problem is cyber-criminals looking to sell their scams to the hundreds of millions on FB. The cyber bullies may be a hard shell to crack as it’s not known until an incident occurs. I am sure it’s a huge issue.
Glad you are doing well!
