Not all wireless routers perform well with high speed broadband. If you’re a Comcast customer who has the XFINITY high speed internet and you have a G-Router, you need to upgrade to get the most out of your wireless network. The G series wireless routers are only capable of delivering 54Mbs and will cause bottlenecks if you are streaming movies and TV programs along with other active devices in the home. The wireless N routers are capable of delivering high speed performance up to 600Mbps, unlike the G. There are many wireless N routers to choose from, but we are going to give you one that performs well with devices that are both G and N networks.

The Netgear N600 is a high performance wireless router that handles both G and N connectivity with simultaneous dual bands (2.4Mhz and 5.0). This means that even if you have a legacy G device or a N device, the router will provide the frequency for each devices with no delay automatically. In addition to bandwidth, the Netgear N600 has an option for a guest network in case you are having friends over who love to bring a laptop along.

The Netgear N600 also has a USB port so that users can hook up an external hard drive for sharing storage, backing up data, or streaming movies from the hard drive. This is a great feature for any home network!

The Netgear N600 is an advanced wireless router that can keep up with the demands from multiple devices connected to the internet. If you’re a Netflix customer and you stream movies from your Blu-ray or laptop, you will love the performance this wireless N Router can deliver. If someone is in another room streaming videos or someone is browsing the internet, this wireless router is up for the challenge.

I recently upgraded to XFINITY high speed internet and I needed a wireless router that could provide both G and N devices with the best connectivity automatically or in this case, simultaneously. The Netgear N600 router was the right choice for our home network that includes multiple devices that have both 802.11n and 802.11a/b/g standards. My last 3 routers were all Linksys and this is the first Netgear wireless router I purchased and am very pleased with the overall performance and features.

Copy machines had their origins in 1440 when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. The old printers used movable type, oil-based ink, and a press to transfer ink onto paper. The modern copier uses a plastic-based toner, electrostatic charges, and heat. In both cases, the goal was to accurately recreate documents. Here are some little-known facts about your photocopiers.

1. Sitting is bad

Statistics vary, but it is said that over 20% of copiers worldwide have had a service call placed because someone has photocopied their rear. Sitting on a copier can break the glass and housing of a machine.

2. Remember to wipe

Digital copiers will scan originals into memory, and then print them. 60% of all used copiers have information left on them from the previous owners. Where a lot of the data was trivial, there have been some cases where the information was vital and sensitive.

3. Color copiers help puppies

The Haloid Corporation sent 7 color copy machines to Disney in the late 50′s. These copiers were used in the production of 101 Dalmatians. Haloid became Xerox, in honor of their best selling product.

4. Bulgarian ingenuity and pain created the copier

In 1937, Bulgarian physicist Georgi Nadjakov discovered that electric polarization can be used to adhere objects to other objects. In 1938, Chester Carlson starts performing experiments with photoconductivity. He had arthritis, and hand copying documents for his job as a patent authority was causing excruciating pain. He is eventually successful with creating a transfer process.

5. Try and try again

Carlson invented the process of copying, but it was not refined. In fact, he took his process to several companies where his work was rejected. GE and IBM could not see a need for Carlson’s product. After several years of perfecting the process, Haloid Corporation obtained a license to market a machine with this technology.

6. Name changes make for better marketing

Carlson’s process of copying was called electrophotography. The Haloid Corporation decided to change the name of the process to xerography, meaning ‘dry writing.’ Their machines were called Xerox machines. Xerox rapidly became a household name.

7. The government knows

Both monochrome and color copiers exist today. To prevent counterfeiting, Xerox color copiers will print a small pattern of dots to identify it. That way, agents can discover the origin of the counterfeit print.

8. It’s not ink

Photocopiers use toner, which is a mixture of plastic granules, rust, pigment, and wax. The granules accept a photostatic charge and are attracted to a photosensitive drum. This drum transfers images to paper. The toner is then sealed to the paper using a heat process. Ink, on the other hand, is placed on the paper through the use of tiny jets which push the liquid in a series of pulses.

9. Speed in the office

The world’s fastest photocopier developed for office use is the Riso ORPHIS X9050. This machine is capable of making over 150 copies per minute. For commercial copies, there are roll fed machines which top over 300 impressions per minute.

Before the advent of photocopying, people had to rely on the use of carbon paper and hand sketching. Unfortunately, this was a tedious, aggravating process which left many hands sore. Chester Carlson’s invention was revolutionary, changing the landscape of business.

A 1920 x 1080 resolution injects a heavy dose of reality in your multi-media experience.

16:9 dynamic aspect ratio

The HDMI connector interface allows simple transmission of uncompromised digital streams.

Digital Visual Interface – Digital (DVI-D) with High Definition Content Protection (HDCP) Video Graphics Array (VGA) High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)

What I like even more about this HD Monitor is the price ($199). This is the perfect gift for back to school or a replacement for that old monitor you currently are using.

Tip: If you use MS Windows with the monitor’s digital inputs, download and use the MS ClearType Tuning utility to improve text readability. Some of the older text fonts were not designed for the crispness achievable with digital pixel control. Enabling Windows ClearType fixes this.

Replacing a keyboard these days is easy and cheap . . . with USB keyboards.

But if you have a laptop, a USB keyboard can be cumbersome. For laptops, however, there are replacement keyboards for certain models. Nevertheless, you will have to disconnect/reconnect a ribbon cable under the keyboard in a laptop. For some models, this is pretty easy to do, and for others it’s a little more complex.

I myself am intimidated by hardware maneuvers on a laptop other than installing RAM modules and installing an HDD. I cracked a case one time and barely got the thing back together in working order. That experience alone was enough to discourage me from even coming close to a manipulation that was even similar to cracking a case on a laptop. And even though my manual detailed the steps to replace a keyboard, it was marked as a “Service Partners Only” thing, and that caveat in the manual discouraged me even more.

So, when my keyboard became so worn that I could barely see the lettering on the keys, my dilemma was “What do I do now?”

At first I thought about using enamel paint just to draw the letters on freehand. I was close to doing that when I found DataCal. They offer a keyboard stencil (they call them “overlays”, which I guess is the industry term) for $14.95 . . . http://www.datacal.com/products/d-standard-replacement-overlays.htm.

So I finally figured that I was going to have to do an Internet order, but I was reluctant to do so for such a small purchase. When I got them, in a 5X7 manila mailing, regular mail, they were the large variety . . . which was NOT what I had ordered. I ordered the “standard” size. So that evening I wrote an email to DataCal customer service about it. I fully expected to be blown off. It’s hard enough to get customer service when you call Dell or HP or any one of those big guys for a big order, so for an order of only $14.95, I thought they would laugh me off.

And then I thought that if they even responded, they would tell me I’d have to send the wrong ones back, at my own expense, before they would give me the right ones.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised by a phone call from DataCal customer service the next morning. The customer service gal very kindly apologized, said that the packing guy must have put the wrong overlays in the envelope, and then said that DataCal would send me the right ones, and that I didn’t have to bother to send the large ones back.

So I got the right ones in the mail a few days later, and my keyboard is now in good repair. They are pretty slick, are the right size and have the font of the rest of the keys, went on pretty easy, even with my shaky hands (tweezers solved that problem), and the only sign of them is that they are much whiter than the keys that didn’t need overlays on them. But with my dirty paws, I expect they’ll soon have the hue of the rest.

Englebart and Bill English worked together comparing various pointing devices for speed and accuracy. Bill English built the original mouse from Englebart’s conceptions. So, “It is safe to say Bill English is the first person to ever use a mouse.

Since then, a handful of companies (namely Xerox, Apple, Microsoft, and Logitech) have poured millions into refining the form and function of the mouse: they’ve changed its number of buttons, changed the interfaces by which mice connect to computers, and tinkered with new methods of tracking movement. But despite four decades of commercial evolution, computer users today handle the mouse in much the same way Englebart did 40 years ago: as an ingeniously efficient and easy-to-use pointing device.

The first marketed integrated mouse – shipped as a part of a computer and intended for personal computer navigation – came with the Xerox 8010 Star Information System in 1981.

The mouse has come along way since 1981 with many variations. Today the mouse is 40 years old, and we owe thanks to Doug Englebart for this invention.

The Intel Core i7 processor gets suited with four new Dell systems, including one mainstream Studio XPS desktop and three gaming systems. Gateway is also dressing up two FX-series gaming systems with Intel Core i7 processors. No news from HP on when they will be offering systems with Core i7.

Are we finally in a stage in computing where hardware is now out performing and pushing software? We look forward to hearing some feedback from consumers who have purchased systems with the Core i7.

The new Core i7s are designed for performance desktops. Intel usually has a high price tag for their latest and greatest, but it’s surprising to see so many systems with this new technology being offered. The Dell Studio XPS desktop starts at $950 while Gateway’s entry-level gaming system starts at $1,250.

The base configuration of the Studio XPS includes the 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-920, 3GB of DDR3 memory, the ATI Radeon HD 3450 with 256MB, a 500GB hard drive and the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. During the holidays, Dell is running regular specials (visit www.dell.com/xpsevent) and the new Studio XPS is currently on the list. The press release states that for the next 48 hours Dell is offering the Studio XPS with 4GB of memory and a 20-inch monitor for $1,000, but when I configured the system, it also offered the new 23-inch monitor, the S2309W, for the same price.

We would like to hear your feedback on these new systems.

Google on Tuesday announced that it is integrating a voice and video plug-in for it Gmail Chat offering that lets you see or hear the friend with which you are chatting.

Users will need to download and install a plug-in, and have access to a Webcam for video purposes. Google has partnered with Logitech and Buy.com to offer discounts of up to 30 percent on several cameras, as well as free shipping, until November 30.

A $99.99 Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, for example, is available for $69.99, while a $49 Logitech QuickCam Communicate MP is now $39.99.

“I’m a big user of Gmail chat. Being able to switch from email to chat as needed, all within the same app, is really great for productivity,” Justin Uberti, a Google software engineer, wrote in a blog post. “But people can only type so fast, and even with our new emoticons, there are still some things that just can’t be expressed in a chat message.”

Once installed, click the “video & more” link inside the chat window and select “start video chat” or “start voice chat.” The friend you are trying to contact will hear a ring and be given the option to accept or ignore the call. Users can then chat within the Gmail tab or pop it out into a separate window and expand or decrease its size.

Voice and video chat is available on Macs running Mac OS X v10.4 or later and PCs running Windows XP or higher. A link to download the offering will be rolled out to all Gmail and Google Apps accounts in the coming days, but it is also available directly at http://mail.google.com/videochat.

Core i7 processors expected to launch later this month include 2.66GHz (Core i7-920) and 3.20GHz (Core i7-965) versions. Prices will range roughly between $285 and just under $1,000.

The Nehalem/Core i7 architecture will scale from two to eight processor cores, have faster chip-to-chip communication (Intel calls this technology QuickPath), do a better job of adjusting performance levels to suit power needs, and have a higher level of integration (more logic will be built directly onto the processor die).

Other salient features include more scalable memory (each processor will have its own dedicated memory), the ability to do more stuff simultaneously (up to 16 threads with simultaneous multi-threading), and new instructions to increase efficiency (called SSE4.2 instructions).

And who’s going to buy i7 systems initially? Here’s what CNET Reviews editor Rich Brown says: “We don’t expect mainstream users will adopt Core i7…at first, at least until the motherboard prices come down.”

Brown continues: “In the short term, it will benefit gamers and digital media types. The initial systems will be gaming oriented.”

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) won’t file criminal charges over the pricing and marketing strategies of graphics chipmaker ATI Technologies, now owned by Advanced Micro Devices, the company said Monday.

The DOJ told AMD on Friday the entire investigation is closed, said Michael Silverman, AMD spokesman.

The DOJ subpoenaed vendors AMD and Nvidia in late 2006 as part of an antitrust investigation into the market for graphics processors and graphics cards. The investigation came a month after AMD finished its acquisition of ATI for US$5.4 billion.

The news is good for AMD, which has struggled financially in part due to its acquisition of ATI.

In July, AMD said it would take a charge in its second quarter of 2008 for $880 million related to ATI’s former business units. The charges were related to impaired assets in ATI’s former handheld and digital TV business units, which were merged into AMD’s consumer electronics group after the acquisition.
