Best Free CD-DVD and Blu-Ray Burning Software

by Frank Jovine on 10/19/2009 in Software

ImgBurn is the most powerful burning application with advanced features that you will not find in a free version for this type of software. The latest version 2.5 is loaded with new features that you can read here.

It has several ‘Modes’, each one for performing a different task:

  • Read – Read a disc to an image file
  • Build – Create an image file from files on your computer or network – or you can write the files directly to a disc
  • Write – Write an image file to a disc
  • Verify – Check a disc is 100% readable. Optionally, you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct
  • Discovery – Put your drive / media to the test! Used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing

It burns Audio CD’s from any file type supported via DirectShow / ACM – including AAC, APE, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, PCM, WAV, WMA and WV.

You can use it to build DVD Video discs (from a VIDEO_TS folder), HD DVD Video discs (from a HVDVD_TS folder) and Blu-Ray Video discs (from a BDAV / BDMV folder) with ease.

It supports Unicode folder/file names, so you shouldn’t run in to any problems if you’re using an international character set.

ImgBurn supports all the Windows Operating Systems such as; Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7 (including all the 64-bit versions).

Con: ImgBurn does not directly copy discs to discs (you need to copy a disc to your hard drive or other storage media and burn the file to disc). The interface can be difficult in locating some of the basic features. The advanced features are a bit confusing and it will take a little time to learn your way around the interface.

      Bunny,

I started using this software a week ago and I am very impressed that it’s free.

I like burning CD’s for road trips, parties, office music, you name it, I probably have a CD for it.
    I have a ripper, :)
Which was found on the net.
I am going to try this out.

We are alike as I do the same thing every other week for the ride to work music.

I normally vouched for BurnAware for free burning software but it can’t burn image (ISO) file to disc (as far as I remember). Looks like ImgBurn is a winner!

      Michael,

I find it an absolute best find for a free burning utility.

Certainly looks like it! I already have a free Ashampoo Burning license though but I’ll certainly keep this software in mind

You certainly can’t beat free and I’m always burning something (although not on blue ray yet).

      Jay,

I burned my first Blu-Ray and it played back very well.

I haven’t tried this software yet but it looks promising. I have tried similar programs before that are free but instead of producing quality copies, it ended up short and hardly even play on a regular DVD player although it plays well on a PC.

I trust Nero more than any other.

      Mathdelane,

If you try it you may put Nero on that back burner, get it. :)
