AVG 9 Antivirus Adds Significant Enhancements in Speed and Protection
by Frank Jovine on 10/05/2009 in Antivirus Software, Security
AVG Technologies, developers of the world’s most popular free anti-virus software, today announced that its family of free and paid internet security products, AVG 9.0, would be generally available to the market in October 2009.
AVG is one of the best known free anti-malware products on the internet. In a recent poll, users choose AVG over some of the better brands like Norton and McAfee Antivirus.
A major addition to AVG is the identity theft protection through a partnership with Intersections Inc,.
Other Improvements
- Scan speed is improved by marking safe files so that they are not scanned in the future unless they change.
- Boot times are also improved and memory usage decreased.
- Added white listing, behavioral protection and cloud operations to their signature-based blocking.
The new version adds the Resident Shield, firewall, and identity protection modules. Improvements in the firewall cut dialogs with the user substantially without sacrificing protection. The LinkScanner component has been improved to cut phishing threats further.
Revolutionary in AVG 9.0 is the integration between the Resident Shield, firewall, and identity protection modules. This enables the modules to share malware information with each other, increasing AVG’s ability to detect and remove most malicious types of malware, rootkits, and ID Theft threats, for which signatures have not yet been issued. The firewall enhancements include a complete redesign to reduce intrusive firewall ASK dialogues by 50 percent.

Its about time, AVG was bogging down so many systems. Maybe I can start recommending it. Although, Microsoft offers a new antimalware service.

Hi all,
give AVG9 a try, we are confident that it really has been improved especially in terms of speed and impact on system. And some of the advanced features like LinkScanner is not available by most competitors – for example, LinkScanner was able to detect the NYTimes.org infection, recent Facebook attacks etc. no matter what the malicious payload was, just by detecting the web attack pattern.

Karel,
Are you from AVG? I have been happy with this product for about a year, but the one thing that people have issues with is speed. It’s somewhat of a resource hog, but the new AVG 9 addresses this issue.

Good anti-virus protection is pretty darn essential in the online world and everyone love it when it’s free. Gotta love it when the marginal cost of an item is essentially zero although I’m always on the look out for that freemium.
I am interested to see how AVG’s new version operates. It certainly comes fairly highly recommended here.

Hi Frank, I was using AVG for awhile, then I got Kaspersky. On your recommendation I also added Advanced System Care. They both rock.

Jonathan,
I truly recommend Advanced System Care. It works well and it’s free, but I did purchase the Pro version.

i have been using the free editions of AVG for more than 2 years. Its really a good antivirus for those who have a better know how of computers and do technical stuff. Other softwares used to delete some files i wanted or were used by certain other softwares. The setups of various programs were a major target leaving the whole package unusable.

Sweet! I’ve loved AVG in the past, but switched to etrust after it missed a virus that killed my system. Time to go back and give AVG a try! I’ve always loved the speed at which they can scan my system, they seem to take far less resources than the commercial counterparts.

Ive always found AVG to be pretty heavy so to speak, I currently use Avast but will probably remove it. I find being careful and following a certain set of rules will keep you free of viruses e.t.c
Antivirus program is ok for “newbie” computer user as they don’t know the best practices to protect them.

Deakaz,
I agree with you on the current version being a little heavy on resources. The new version addresses performance and speed.

I’ll be glad to see a speedier AVG. I like it, but it does tend to bog down a system.

Joanie,
AVG uses less resources which means better performance. Not bad for free!

Tom,
Thank you for the information on the incompatibility with Win 7 and AVG. I am sure AVG will have a version out before the Win 7 release.
