Ask the Readers: Favorite Firefox Extensions?
by RT on 05/18/2008 in Internet, Software
We’ve been taking a look at the statistics for Tech Jaws the past week or so that we’ve been in business, and we’ve noticed that most of you are using Firefox. In fact, the numbers are staggeringly higher than any other browser used to visit Tech Jaws.
Some of you are using some nearly up-to-date iteration of Firefox 2, a much smaller percentage seem to be the brave few who are courageously testing Firefox 3 beta, and the rest of you are using some other browser.
Firefox is known for it’s excellence in security, tabbed browsing, cross-platform availability, and extensibility. We’re not saying other browsers like Internet Explorer 7 don’t have their merits, but we do happen to be slightly biased towards Firefox.
If you’ve never tried out the Firefox web browser – now is the time to take it for a spin! It has so many features and possibilities for customization and personalization, you couldn’t possibly call yourself a Shark without having at least installed it once.
Some of you will say this is blatant fanboy-ism, but we’ve said from the beginning, we’re here to show you what’s good. We aren’t here to start a flame war. Some will say Opera has it’s merits, some will say Safari is the best you can get on the Mac (or now even on the PC!).
Since most of you are using “the ‘Fox,” what’s your favorite browser plugin? We want to hear everything, from the outrageously silly to the insanely useful. Maybe someone browsing here will learn about a plugin they’ve never tried before, and find what they’ve been missing out on!

“Unwrap Text” is one I really find useful for eliminating the annoyance of a long and wrapped URL on a web page, that is interrupted by spaces or characters and/or isn’t “linkified” (clickable). In other words, it keeps you from doing a lot of copying and pasting into the address bar. Another reason why I like it: It also has the unintended but very useful effect of working on a plain text, *single*-line URL (that isn’t wrapped). I’m talking about those URLs you sometimes see where HTML is absent or disabled, making you copy and paste a link into an address bar. Unwrap Text will work on those even if they don’t need unwrapping.

Ugh that’ll be a lot of plug-ins to tell
If you want me to pick only one, I’d say my ISP usage meter extension (I can see the quota that I’m up to and how many left for the month) – although there’s a Vista’s sidebar for my ISP usage too
