$100 Walmart Gift Card Phishing Scam

by on 03/10/2011 in Scams & Hoaxes, Security

The company and website behind this scam is also known for other phishing related activity such as; selling Dell Laptops, illegal pharmacies, pirated software, online gambling and now a FREE $100 Walmart Gift Card just for providing your personal information and filling out a survey.

This one is getting old, but it seems to work enough that these scammers continue to hunt for victims by changing up their scams.

Walmart Gift Card Phishing Scam

There are four problems that stand out right away;

  1. In the title it says $100 Gift Card, but on the survey page it says $1000. Just a small detail they overlooked.
  2. The site redirects from http://dissemination.LINSONNE.INFO/sw/s0ut5w35t_90230/s0w3.asp
  3. The site has a poor rating with WOT (Web of Trust)
  4. The site appeared on an automatically composed list of spamvertised websites.

I also checked the reputation of the domain at URLVoid and here’s what I found – 4 out 18 scanning engines found the website (freebotious.com) to be dangerous.

Urlvoid.com allows users to scan a website address with multiple scanning engines such as Google Diagnostic, PcTools Browser Defender, Norton SafeWeb, MyWOT to facilitate the detection of possible dangerous websites.

In addition to what I discovered above, the online form at freebotious.com is not secured. This means your information is not encrypted when it’s being sent from an online form or webpage.

The site does offer a way to Unsubscribe, but I have never subscribed to their services. I am sure they use an email harvest program that scrubs the web for email addresses.
